Analysing Your Opponents

This is a little summary about how to identify the fish from the sharks. The basic Principle being you want to stay away from the sharks. Things you will need for this is some sort of poker tracking software such as Poker Tracker and a Hud such as PokerAce.

Identifying your standard weak loose fish

Your standard weak loose fish is your friend at NL holdem tables. They will see too many flops and bet them straight forward. On your hud you will see your VPIP (voluntary put in pot) this is how often your player will put money into the pot and your raising % preflop. Then your post flop agression factor. If your player is playing with over 20% VPIP then hes probably a fish. If he only raises <6-7% then hes a weak loose fish. Meaning he will see alot of flops but limp most of them. Meaning hes seeing alot of flops with junk - to deal with these type of fish re raise them with any semi decent holding to either make them make a mistake preflop (by calling) taking down the blinds. These kind of fish generally have a pretty weak post flop aggression factor (around 1 or less) this means that if they are betting at you post flop then they probably have somthing.

How to identify your average loose aggressive player (LAG)

Your average loose aggressive player will raise too much and see the flop too much. This can be seen with a 20+ VPIP accompanied with a 20+ preflop raise and usually will also be accompanied with a high post flop aggression factor like 3.5+. These players are pretty easy to exploit. The trick to tackling these players is 3 betting them preflop and check raising them post flop with semi decent holdings . In my experiance LAG players do not like being played back against. Also if you flop a monster check it and let them bet into you. They are likely to stack off against you if you let them think they can try and bully about when you have the nuts :)

Remember a miss conception is to completely tighten up against LAG players i think this is untrue. You can get alot of value out of your monster flop hands if you play these players.

You average good tight aggressive shark (TAG)

This type of player will be seeing roughly 15% of flops and raising 8-10% preflop. Agro factor of around 2.5 . These players are best to avoid making special plays against as they usually know what they are doing. Don't worry you wont come across a lot until you start moving up to .50/1 . Just play your standard game against these players as you should aim to be one of them :).
