Poker Strategy: Squeeze Play

What is a squeeze play?

A squeeze play is a move that makes your hand look stronger than it actually is and results in your opponents folding their hands and you stealing the pot.

An Example.

You're sat on the BB with 88. The table folds round to the CO who raises 3x BB. The button then calls the COs 3x BB raise. You on the BB either shove you're stack of around 15BBs (because of course you'd shove here with 10BBs) representing a very strong hand and causing the CO and button to fold their hands possibly folding a better hand than yours.

Squeeze plays can be made when there are say 5 limpers in a pot. At this point if you are last to act them making a BIG raise or even a SHOVE here with a hand like KT is a decent play providing the blinds are big enough and the players have shown enough weakness in their limps that you are very certain you can get them off their hand.

Don't get carried away.

Time and time again players will see squeeze plays working very effectively and taking down big pots with very marginal hands. If people pick up on this obvious squeeze playing then players might begin to get tricky with premium hands.

I.e Villain has AA and there are 3 or 4 limps before him. If he has a strong reason to believe that if he limps there is a good chance of a big raise from you, the squeeze player, then he may trap you in that way.

This is also a great way to take squeeze player's chips so keep an eye out for making those sort of plays as well.

What stacks should be squeeze playing?

Big Stack 40BBs+. You should be looking at squeeze playing ocasionally with your tight image. Only do this in position and only do it with hands that wont have you dominated. Don't squeeze with AJ type hands at this stage, suited connectors or mid pockets are a much prefered option.

Small Stack 10-15BBs. Squeezing and punishing limpers is your best option here. If you try to squeeze a 3x BB raise they are very inclined to call you with a much wider range. Here you should be squeezing with low-mid pockets or punshing limpers with almost any 2 if you have position.
