Protecting your Blinds
Ok, so everyone seems to be posting advice articles these days so I thought i'd give my two cents. I'm going to post 1 hand where I protected my BB very aggressively just so i can say why I did it and give you guys a little insight into the art of protecting. Seat 1: MickyRossi (5619 in chips) Seat 2: littledenno (31223 in chips) Seat 3: handyb (12068 in chips) Seat 4: smouthe1 (7709 in chips) Seat 5: jitterbug777 (20557 in chips) Seat 6: Haubitze31 (30850 in chips) Seat 7: Donniedumper (17916 in chips) Seat 8: sssTRIPLEsss (8720 in chips) Seat 9: yum1yum (23796 in chips) MickyRossi: posts the ante 125 littledenno: posts the ante 125 handyb: posts the ante 125 smouthe1: posts the ante 125 jitterbug777: posts the ante 125 Haubitze31: posts the ante 125 sssTRIPLEsss: posts the ante 125 yum1yum: posts the ante 125 sssTRIPLEsss: posts small blind 600 yum1yum: posts big blind 1200 *** HOLE CARDS *** Dealt to yum1yum [Jc 9h] MickyRossi: folds littledenno: folds handyb: folds smouthe1: folds jitterbug777: folds Haubitze31: raises 3600 to 4800 sssTRIPLEsss: folds yum1yum: raises 18871 to 23671 and is all-in Haubitze31: folds yum1yum collected 11200 from pot yum1yum: doesn't show hand Ok, so this was a turbo tournament and blinds were already big. I'm looking at putting on a lot of aggression so that I can go onto the final table with a big stack. This guy was a big stack for the same reasons, he was playing aggressive and I was playing tight. At this point in the game my stack is more than enough to get him off AQ especially with my image. In my opinion this guy is only calling with AA/KK/QQ/AK and mayb JJ so I figure this is a perfect chance to steal the 11k that's in the pot! Protecting your BB is a bad idea against short stacks because they usually will be committed and will call you with a much wider range of hands. This guy can easily lay down his JJ knowing that he still has 25k left and more than enough to stay alive. You should only ever pull off these stunts when you have been at the table long enough to understand certain players at the table and only if you are getting the right fold equity to get villain off 90% of his hand range. Also the pot has to be big enough to be worth while stealing :p The great side affect of doing this also means that they will tend not to steal your BB again. This guy insta-folded so I guess he had JUNK heehee. Go me! ended up bubbling the final table with A9 against A6 and that was protecting my BB lol. |
